Todorov ensured that while the focus kept shifting, the result was a magnificent whole. In the first movement the mood could switch from mystery to jollity, from a sweeping cello tune to a perky woodwind outburst, in a moment.

He has a fine sensitivity in his interplay with the soloists, even though he can only give them their cues through a screen.

The heart of the symphonic repertoire is Slavic and Bulgarian music — Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff alongside Vladigerov, Veselin Stoyanov and Dvořák. On the operatic side it is Verdi and, above all, Puccini — the composer who first turned his attention to opera.
