Biography
Nayden Todorov is one of the prominent European conductors of his generation, renowned for his versatile and vivid interpretations across a wide range of genres.
Born in 1974 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, he received his first piano lessons at the age of five and made his conducting debut at sixteen. While still a student in Vienna, Jerusalem and Sofia, he began his concert career, performing across Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. Selected from among more than 150 candidates, he became permanent conductor of the North Israel Symphony Orchestra in Haifa.
Todorov has made more than 130 recordings for labels such as Naxos, Danacord, Hungaroton, MMO, Balkanton and IMI — most recently Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra — and has produced numerous music programs for radio and television. Over the years he has collaborated with some of the most prominent artists of our time.
In addition to his musical career, Todorov hosts a television program dedicated to classical music and, in his free time, writes short stories; his first collection, A Whiff of Angels, was published in 2021.
He has twice been named “Musician of the Year” in Bulgaria — a distinction only a handful of Bulgarian musicians have received more than once. His international honors include the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France (2025) and Romania’s Order of Cultural Merit in the rank of Grand Officer (2024).
Since 2017, he has served as Artistic Director of the Sofia Philharmonic, leading the orchestra at venues including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Berliner Philharmonie and BOZAR in Brussels. Recognized for his vision and his ability to raise an institution to international standing, he was invited three times to serve as Bulgaria’s Minister of Culture in a challenging period for the country — a rare acknowledgment of an artist’s broader leadership.
With his vast experience on the podium, Todorov approaches every performance with inspiration and joy, offering interpretations that captivate him and his audiences alike.
