Alcoy's Christmas traditions combine public processions, music and puppet theatre. Its Three Kings parade is first documented in 1866 and was revived in 1885, when it began to acquire its enduring form. The celebrations include Les pastoretes, a procession of children dressed as shepherds, accompanied by dancers and musicians of La Primitiva. Camilo Pérez Monllor composed L'entrà dels Reis for the festivities and presented the score to the band in 1913.
The Betlem de Tirisiti is a rod-puppet nativity play that combines biblical scenes with comic characters and customs from local life. Its present form emerged in the late nineteenth century from three family-run shows. It received recognition as intangible cultural heritage in 2002, and performances are given for school groups and family audiences during the Christmas season.
