City
Almería's history is closely connected with its Mediterranean port and the Alcazaba above the old city. During the tenth and eleventh centuries, the city developed as a trading centre within al-Andalus, with maritime connections across the Mediterranean. The fortress remains a prominent expression of that period.
Cinema adds another layer to Almería's cultural identity. The House of Cinema occupies a restored nineteenth-century residence and explores filmmaking in the city and province. John Lennon stayed in the house in 1966 while working on How I Won the War; the museum also presents the connection between his stay and Strawberry Fields Forever. Its exhibitions place that episode within the wider history of the region as a setting for film production.
