Amsterdam's canal district reflects a major programme of urban expansion developed from the late sixteenth century and carried out in the seventeenth. Concentric waterways, reclaimed ground and streets extending around the older settlement created an urban landscape distinguished by gabled houses and a close relationship between water and architecture. The canal ring inside the Singelgracht is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage property.
Music is represented by institutions including the Royal Concertgebouw. Its programme encompasses orchestral concerts, soloists and educational activities, while its operation continues a tradition of private support and fundraising. The hall's concert calendar brings international performers and Dutch musical organisations to the city. Together, the preserved canal landscape and active cultural institutions connect Amsterdam's historic development with its contemporary public life.
