Bad Neuenahr’s development as a spa began with the discovery of the Apollinaris spring in 1852 and continued with the drilling of the Grosser Sprudel in 1861. Its spa park and Jugendstil buildings reflect the period when royalty and other visitors came to take the waters. The park also provides a setting for cultural events, including the Klangwelle programme.
The July 2021 flood caused severe destruction in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and changed the priorities of the town. The planned state garden show, already postponed from 2022 to 2023, was cancelled in September 2021 because reconstruction required the available financial and human resources. Areas prepared for the show, including the dahlia garden, had themselves been badly damaged. The resort’s more recent history is therefore one of rebuilding alongside the preservation of its nineteenth-century spa identity.
