Beersel's medieval castle occupies low ground in the Zenne valley, where it formed a defensive outpost for Brussels and Brabant. Dating from around 1300, the fortress has an irregular, roughly elliptical plan, three substantial wall towers and a surrounding moat. Its position below the village reflects the importance of the valley landscape to its defensive function.
Contemporary cultural activity has a different setting at CC de Meent in Alsemberg. The centre's programme includes theatre, film, jazz and classical music, alongside performances for younger audiences. Its combination of concert programming and other performing arts provides a public cultural meeting place within the municipality. The castle and the arts centre represent distinct aspects of Beersel's character: a surviving defensive monument and a venue for present-day artistic activity.
