Beijing's historic centre developed around a north–south axis that organised imperial palaces, gardens, ceremonial buildings and places of sacrifice. Its origins lie in the Yuan capital of Dadu, with major additions under the Ming and Qing dynasties. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024, the Central Axis preserves an urban arrangement in which political authority, ritual and architectural symmetry were closely connected.
The National Centre for the Performing Arts represents a more recent chapter in the capital's cultural life. Opened on 22 December 2007, it brings opera, ballet, orchestral music and theatre into a complex with dedicated performance spaces. Its activities also include exhibitions and traditional Chinese stage forms. These institutions and monuments offer different perspectives on a city whose ceremonial spaces and public cultural venues have evolved over many centuries.
