Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum occupies a former industrial wharf on a bend of the Nervión. Constructed between 1993 and 1997, it formed part of the recovery of the riverbanks for cultural and leisure uses. Frank Gehry's design combines titanium, limestone and glass in a building whose sculptural forms have become closely associated with the city's modern identity.
The museum's construction required digital modelling adapted from aerospace technology to translate the complex geometry into buildable forms. Thin titanium sheets give the exterior a surface that changes with the light and weather. Inside, three levels are organised around a central atrium and linked by walkways, lifts and stairs. The building makes the relationship between industrial waterfront, architectural experimentation and the public presentation of art particularly visible.
