Binghamton's regional cultural life is supported by the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts at Binghamton University. Opened in 1985, the multi-theatre complex presents concerts, theatre, dance, lectures and student performances. It serves both the university and surrounding communities, combining visiting artists with opportunities for students to participate in creative work.
The centre is named for Floyd E. Anderson, a lawyer, state legislator and judge who helped establish the institutional foundations of the university. His legislation enabled New York State to take over Triple Cities College and develop it as Harpur College, which later became part of Binghamton University. The centre's public programme continues this connection between education and civic life, giving regional audiences access to performance on a university campus.
