Bonefeld is the Westerwald in a single village. A few hundred households on the plateau above the Rhine valley, in the old county of Wied between Neuwied and the wooded heights, it belongs to the country of half-timbered farmsteads, beech woods and basalt — the "Westerwälder" landscape of clear air and long weather that the region's famous song praises for the wind whistling cold over its heights. Village life keeps the classic order: church and fire brigade, clubs and seasonal feasts, fields shading into forest at the last fence.
The location is the quiet advantage: the Rhine's romantic gorge begins minutes downhill, Neuwied's Deichstadt and the Baroque halls of Schloss Engers lie in easy reach, and the Wiedtal's mills and meadows curl through the hills behind — so that the village serves walkers and cyclists as a green threshold between river valley and upland. The deep human past of this neighbourhood is world-famous a few fields away, where the researchers of Monrepos study Ice Age humanity on the Neuwied heights.
Bonefeld's public record is deliberately modest — no castle, no chronicle of princes; its history is agrarian, parochial and communal, written in field names and parish registers. The portrait is honest at this scale: a working Westerwald village, hospitable and unhurried, holding its place between forest and Rhine with the durability such places quietly perfect.
