Bruneck's castle, formerly a summer residence of the prince-bishops of Brixen, houses the Ripa branch of the Messner Mountain Museum. The museum examines the lives of mountain communities through art, domestic settings, tools, ritual objects and recorded voices. Its geographical scope reaches beyond the Alps to communities in Asia, Africa and South America, considering how people adapt their homes, livelihoods and traditions to high-altitude environments. The name Ripa combines Tibetan words for mountain and person. Set within the historic castle, the exhibition connects Bruneck's architectural heritage with a comparative account of human life in mountain regions.
