Calw is closely associated with Hermann Hesse, who was born there on 2 July 1877 and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. The town's Hermann Hesse Museum opened in 1990 in Haus Schüz, a historic residence overlooking the writer's birthplace. Its collection presents his life and work within the setting of the town in which he spent his early years. As of September 2026, the museum is closed for renovation and redevelopment, with the municipal visitor information indicating closure into 2027. Calw's literary heritage thus remains visible in its historic townscape while the museum prepares a renewed setting for its collections.
