Catania

Catania's Teatro Massimo Bellini opened on 31 May 1890 with Bellini's Norma, but the city's ambition for a major theatre had taken much longer to realise. Plans followed the earthquake of 1693, and a foundation stone was laid in 1812 before shortages of money stopped the project. The nineteenth-century undertaking passed through designs by Andrea Scala and Carlo Sada, with municipal involvement giving it fresh momentum in 1880. Although construction was completed in 1887, financial difficulties and cholera delayed the inauguration. The theatre's history gives the city's musical identity a concrete setting: an opera house achieved through repeated revisions and sustained civic effort.
