Danville's Norton Center for the Arts places a substantial performing arts complex on the campus of Centre College. Opened in 1973, it was designed by William Wesley Peters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Newlin Hall provides the larger auditorium, while Weisiger Theatre offers a more intimate space. The centre has presented orchestral music, visiting soloists, dance and touring theatre, with artists participating in workshops and masterclasses as well as performances. Its history shows how a college venue can serve several audiences at once, giving students direct contact with professional practice and the surrounding community access to a varied public programme.
