City
Lisboa is a city that learned its beauty from a catastrophe. The earthquake of 1755 — All Saints' Day, the churches full — destroyed the imperial capital and shocked European philosophy; Pombal's answer was the Baixa, the elegant grid between hills that made Lisbon the first great planned downtown of the modern age. Around it the survivors climb: Alfama's Moorish tangle under the castle, the miradouros where the city watches itself in azulejo-blue light, and at Belém the Jerónimos monastery and tower, Manueline stone spun like rope to celebrate the sea route to India — Vasco da Gama lies inside, and the pastéis de Belém dynasty sweetens the pilgrimage next door.
The city's voice is fado — the fate-heavy song of the taverns, raised to world heritage by UNESCO and to immortality by Amália Rodrigues, whose tomb lies in the national pantheon. Its people's palace of entertainment is the Coliseu dos Recreios, the great iron rotunda of 1890 on the Avenida da Liberdade's shoulder — circus, opera, fado and symphony under one dome for over a century, and the venue documented in the concert record — while the Gulbenkian's orchestra and museum garden keep the modern establishment. Tram 28 rattles through it all: Lisboa, rebuilt on philosophy and saudade, still faces the river as if expecting ships.
