Luhmühlen is a hamlet that commands the equestrian world's attention. In the pine-and-heather country of the Lüneburg Heath, the little settlement on the Luhe — administratively a locality by Salzhausen and Westergellersen, which the archive should note for event records — holds one of the sport of eventing's supreme addresses: its tournament grounds host one of the very few five-star three-day events on earth, the Longines Luhmühlen Horse Trials, where Olympic and world champions ride dressage, cross-country and jumping each June before international crowds camped among the birches.
The tradition runs deep: German championships, European and world title events have been decided on this turf across the decades, and the permanent cross-country course through meadow and woodland — water complexes, banks and timber — counts among the sport's classic tests, walked reverently by visitors in the off-season as others walk famous fairways. Stables, a riding academy and the trade village around the arenas keep horses at the centre of the local economy year-round.
Beyond the rails lies the Heath at its most serene: the Luhe's trout water, heather purpling toward Amelinghausen's blossom festival in August, the Lopau valley's trails. For the archive: Luhmühlen is a venue and locality, not a municipality — a world stage folded into a heath hamlet, at its loudest exactly one long weekend a year.
