Massa is the ducal city under the marble mountains. Capital with Carrara of Italy's whitest province, it lived for centuries as the seat of the Malaspina and Cybo-Malaspina dynasties: their Renaissance palace colours the central square with its theatrical courtyard, and their castle — the Rocca, one of the region's most impressive fortress-residence hybrids — crowns the hill where medieval walls meet princely loggias, looking from the Apuan Alps' quarried faces to the sea at Marina di Massa, the family's little state complete in one glance.
The mountains gave the trade — Massa's own quarries fed the marble fleets alongside Carrara's, the Apuans' snowless white scars the region's permanent signature — and music claims a native dynasty of note: Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi, born here in 1728 into a family of musicians, became one of settecento opera's most performed composers from Naples to London, his sons continuing the firm; the city's theatre tradition and academy keep the name honoured at home.
Between rock and water, Massa arranges the Versilian pleasures: the cathedral's treasury and the Baroque lanes, chestnut villages climbing toward the Apuan park's refuges and eagles, and the umbrella-pine coast of the Marina with the promenade summers of the Riviera Apuana. Princes in the palace, opera in the pedigree, marble in the mountain light: Massa quarries all three.
