City
Minden is where waterways perform acrobatics: at the Wasserstrassenkreuz, the Mittelland Canal crosses the river Weser on a monumental aqueduct — ships sailing over ships, one of Germany's great engineering spectacles, best watched from the locks where vessels are lifted between the two water levels like freight in a cathedral-sized elevator. The crossing suits a city that has always lived by passage: a bishopric founded by Charlemagne, a Hanseatic trader on the Weser, and the guardian of the Porta Westfalica gap just upstream, where the river breaks through the hills beneath the colossal Kaiser Wilhelm monument.
The thousand-year cathedral anchors the old town: its treasury — golden crosses, reliquaries of the first rank — counts among Germany's richest, and its early-Gothic hall has been the region's spiritual centre since Carolingian days. Around it survive Weser Renaissance façades and the arcaded town hall where, each year, the Battle of Minden of 1759 is remembered with roses — worn in the hats of British regiments ever since their improbable victory here, a tradition linking Minden to parade grounds across the Channel.
The city's cultural season runs through the Stadttheater and the cathedral's music; the Kaiser's monument offers the panoramic reckoning: river, canal, gap and plain — Minden's whole logistical destiny visible in one view.
