Moers belonged to the House of Orange — and now belongs to improvisation. Every Whitsun since 1972 the Moers Festival has made this Lower Rhine town a world capital of free jazz and adventurous music: four days when the parks and halls fill with the uncategorisable, from downtown New York legends to discoveries without genre, an audience camping among the avant-garde — one of Europe's most storied new-music festivals, grown from utopian beginnings into civic identity. A comedy arts festival answers in autumn; the town evidently likes its culture unruly. The princely past is worn lightly. The county of Moers passed by inheritance to the Princes of Orange — William of Orange's dynasty ruled here — before Prussia collected it; the moated Schloss in its English park holds the Grafschafter Museum's telling of castle, county and orange lineage. Coal wrote the third chapter: the Rheinpreußen collieries made Moers a mining city for a century, and the miners' settlements — garden-city rows built for the pits — now count as heritage, while the giant pithead legacy has softened into cycling country along the Rhine meadows toward Duisburg's industrial cathedrals. Orange by descent, black by coal, free by festival: Moers keeps improbable company in perfect ease.
