Roosendaal was made by the timetable. When the railway from Antwerp met the Dutch network here in 1854, the quiet peat-and-rye town became the border station of the realm — customs sheds, international expresses, the first and last stop of the Netherlands — and it grew accordingly: a railway city in a country of water cities, its fortunes coupled to the line, its station still the point where Belgian and Dutch trains exchange their passengers. Sugar sweetened the industry — the beet refineries of West Brabant made Roosendaal a sugar capital — and Brabant supplied the temperament, which peaks each February: at carnival the town becomes "Tullepetaonestad", turkey-town, and civic life is conducted for days in costume and dialect under the prince's cheerful misrule.
The town's stage is documented in the concert record: Schouwburg De Kring, the municipal theatre whose halls have received the touring circuit — opera, operetta, orchestras, cabaret — for the West Brabant audience, the classic mid-size Dutch schouwburg doing its patient national work. Around it, the shopping town serves a green borderland, with the Rucphen woods and Belgian Kalmthout heath as weekend country. A junction, a sugar bowl, a turkey crown in February: Roosendaal runs on connections, and knows how to celebrate an arrival.
