San Gimignano is the Middle Ages' Manhattan, preserved mid-boast. Of the seventy-odd tower-houses its merchant families raised in their competitions of stone, fourteen still stand — the UNESCO-listed skyline that announces the town across the Val d'Elsa like a mirage of grey skyscrapers, best earned by climbing the Torre Grossa for the rooftop geometry and the Tuscan checkerboard beyond. The wealth came from saffron and the Via Francigena's pilgrim traffic; the art it bought remains in dense splendour: the Collegiata's complete fresco walls — Old and New Testaments in strip-cartoon majesty, Ghirlandaio's luminous chapel of Santa Fina — and the Civic Museum's Maestà under the very tower.
Wine sustains the modern pilgrimage: Vernaccia di San Gimignano, praised by Dante's century and beloved of Renaissance courts, became in 1966 the first Italian wine granted denomination status — the white of these hills carries the town's name on tables worldwide, its wine experience museum and tastings extending the tradition. Piazza della Cisterna's wells and gelato queues, the fortress garden's views, saffron still in the shops: the town manages its fame with medieval walls and modern patience.
Editorial note for the workbook: the source file's heading "San Gimigo" is a corrupted duplicate of San Gimignano — merged here; correct the city registry accordingly. One skyline, one entry: the towers need no double.
