Stromberg sent Germany its Michel. Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut, the Palatine cavalry general born here in 1574, fought the Spanish with such storied bravado that — so the cherished account runs — his name rode into the language: "der deutsche Michel", the honest German everyman, traces one of his disputed origins to this Hunsrück soldier, and Stromberg has adopted the general with monument and festival, a village-town claiming a national byword.
The heights carry the older powers: the Stromburg, the castle above town, passed centuries as a noble seat and siege objective before its modern fame as a gourmet address under a celebrated television chef — the silhouette remains the town's crown — while the Gollenfels ruin watches from the opposite rock. Between them, Stromberg keeps a compact centre of church, market and the Puricelli legacy: the ironmaster dynasty whose works and endowments shaped the valley's nineteenth century.
The setting is the deep asset: the Soonwald's great beech ridge rises directly behind — the Soonwaldsteig strikes off toward its lookout towers, and the neighbouring village of Dörrebach shares the forest hem — while the Guldenbach descends toward Bingen and the Rhine's gorge a few minutes away, vineyards taking over from timber en route. A general in the language, a castle in the kitchen, a forest at the door: Stromberg's fame punches above its rooftops.
