Sugar Loaf — two words canonically — is not a city at all but a hamlet of the Town of Chester in New York's Orange County (a locality note for the registry), a single winding street of pre-Revolutionary houses beneath the sugarloaf-shaped mountain that named it. Founded in the 1740s as a waypoint on the Kings Highway, it dozed through two centuries of farms and applejack saloons before reinventing itself in the 1960s as an artisans' village: the barns and cottages along Kings Highway filled with potters, leatherworkers, candle-makers and painters, and Sugar Loaf became the Hudson Valley's best-loved craft colony, its studios and festivals drawing weekend pilgrims from the city an hour away. The surrealist Kurt Seligmann's homestead at the village edge adds an unexpected chapter of art history.
The hamlet's improbable concert hall arrived in 1992: the Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts, a fully equipped 689-seat theatre built by the stage-lighting manufacturer Richard Logothetis, which hosted international touring companies — the route by which opera reached a village of craftsmen. The "Kings Theatre Company" of the source records is the non-profit that later took over the house, now the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center (venue notes for the registry). A one-street village with a proper proscenium: Sugar Loaf is the archive's Hudson Valley miniature.
