City
Tokyo supports more professional orchestras than any city on earth — the count runs to eight full-time symphonic ensembles before the chamber forces begin — and the audience to match: the world's largest metropolis treats the European canon as naturalised citizenry, Beethoven's Ninth sung by massed choirs each December as a national year-end rite. The concert record documents the tradition's mother house: the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Ueno park, Maekawa's 1961 masterpiece — the first great postwar hall, still the capital's beloved home for opera and ballet — together with the Tokyo City Philharmonic, one of the eight; Suntory Hall's vineyard terraces and the New National Theatre extend the estate.
Around the concert halls, Edo's city runs its dual system: the Imperial Palace's moats and pines at the exact centre of the neon galaxy, Senso-ji's incense in Asakusa, kabuki at the Kabuki-za, sumo at the Kokugikan — and the world's densest constellation of Michelin stars, from temple-quiet sushi counters to ramen queues. Shibuya's crossing performs urbanism as choreography; the Yamanote line strings the city's villages into one circuit. A metropolis that rebuilt itself twice in a century and kept eight orchestras in work throughout: Tokyo is the strongest evidence that scale and refinement can share an address — thirty-seven million residents, pianissimo on cue.
