Troisdorf

Troisdorf keeps Europe's oldest fishing brotherhood and Germany's only picture-book museum. Where the Sieg meets the Rhine at the Bergheim district, the Fischereibruderschaft has managed the river's fishery in documented continuity reaching back around a millennium — Europe's oldest such guild, its museum by the ferry telling salmon centuries on the very bank — while in the moated hunting lodge of Burg Wissem, the Bilderbuchmuseum devotes itself entirely to the picture book: original illustrations from classic to contemporary, a national one-of-a-kind that makes the town a pilgrimage for illustrators and families alike, the castle park adding storybook grounds.

Between these gentle institutions lies a robust industrial history: Troisdorf grew on wire, profiles and explosives — the Mannstaedt works and the Dynamit Nobel era stamped the quarters — and today's diversified plants keep the town among the Rhineland's working centres, its districts strung from Sieg to city forest.

The wild card is genuinely wild: the Wahner Heide at the town's edge, the vast heath-and-dune reserve shared with the airport's hinterland, counts among the most species-rich landscapes of the German northwest — orchids, nightjars and grazing herds on former military ground, threaded by trails from Troisdorf's doorstep. Fishermen by charter, picture books by castle, heathland by fortune: Troisdorf's collection is quietly singular.
