Ubeda — Úbeda, with its accent, flagged for the register — built the Renaissance in the middle of an olive sea. With its twin Baeza, the Jaén hill town holds Spain's finest concentration of the style outside the court cities: the UNESCO-listed ensemble around the Plaza Vázquez de Molina — the Sacra Capilla del Salvador's funerary splendour, the Vázquez de Molina palace, the honeyed stone of Andrés de Vandelvira's architecture — raised by the imperial secretaries Cobos and Molina when Charles V's paperwork ran through their hands and their fortunes ran home to Úbeda. Even the Spanish language remembers the town: "irse por los cerros de Úbeda" — to wander off through Úbeda's hills — is the national idiom for losing the thread, born, legend insists, of a knight's convenient detour.
The potters' quarter of San Millán keeps the green-glazed alfarería of the Tito dynasties turning as it has for centuries, and the olive horizon — the world's densest — delivers oils that the town's mills press into denomination-crowned prizes. Úbeda's modern son set it all to music: Joaquín Sabina, Spain's beloved songwriter-poet, was born here, and the town claims the rasp with pride. The concert record's register — bands, choirs, church music, festival visits — plays under Vandelvira's cornices. Stone from an empire's salaries, oil from a million trees, a rhyme in every jukebox: Úbeda's hills reward the detour.
