Vechta

Vechta breeds horses, crowns its year with an eight-century fair, and teaches. The Oldenburg Münsterland's twin capital is a cradle of the Oldenburger — the celebrated sport-horse bloodlines whose elite auctions bring international buyers to the region's rings — and horsemanship saturates the calendar, from breeders' shows to the equestrian halls that serve one of Germany's great riding countries.

The Stoppelmarkt is the civic heartbeat: documented since 1298, the August fair on the stubble fields ranks among Germany's oldest and largest folk festivals — a vast city of marquees, rides and livestock tradition that multiplies the town's population for a week and commands homecomings like a national holiday. History's sterner relics gather in the Zitadellenpark, where the reconstructed Kaponier and museum quarter recall Vechta's fortress and prison centuries under Münster's prince-bishops.

The modern engine is youthful: the University of Vechta and a booming agri-food economy — the district counts among Europe's most intensive farming regions — have made the town one of Lower Saxony's growth stories, Catholic Münsterland tradition and student cafés sharing the Große Straße. Around lie moor and geest, the Dammer hills' pilgrim churches and carnival, and cycling plains in all directions. Foals in the ring, a fair since the Middle Ages, degrees by the Moorbach: Vechta compounds them confidently.
