Vidin holds Bulgaria's northwestern corner, where the Danube completes its great bend, and holds it from the country's best-preserved medieval castle: Baba Vida, whose towers have risen from the riverbank for a thousand years on Roman foundations. In the fourteenth century the city was a capital — Tsar Ivan Sratsimir ruled the Vidin Tsardom from these walls, the last Bulgarian realm to fall to the Ottomans — and it remained a fortress ever after, from the rebel pasha Osman Pazvantoğlu, whose elegant mosque and library recall his breakaway Danubian statelet, to the cruciform barracks and river ramparts of the nineteenth century.
Post-Liberation Vidin built a graceful river-town centre — the Theatre, among Bulgaria's first purpose-built playhouses, the cathedral of St Dimitar, promenades under the riverside park's old trees — and a remarkable synagogue, second in the Balkans only to Sofia's. Ruined for decades, it was reborn in 2023 as the cultural centre "Jules Pascin", honouring the painter born in Vidin in 1885 who became a prince of Montparnasse — the town's unlikeliest gift to modern art.
With the Belogradchik Rocks and the Magura Cave's prehistoric paintings within excursion range, and a season carried by theatre, museum and the state ensembles' visits along the Danube circuit, Vidin rewards the traveller who goes to the end of the map.
