Viersen swings to jazz and keeps an academy of fools. The Festhalle — the town's grand early-twentieth-century hall — hosts the International Jazz Festival that has made Viersen a name among European aficionados: decades of headline nights, broadcast and recorded, big bands and world soloists in a Lower Rhine mid-town whose September belongs to the saxophone. The town returns the compliment with a jazz archive of civic pride and year-round series in the hall.
The second institution is older and merrier: in the Dülken district resides the Narrenakademie, the historic "academy of fools" — a carnival society with eighteenth-century roots, its mock-scholarly rituals, windmill headquarters and honorary "professors" preserving Rhenish humour as an organised discipline; the Narrenmühle turns its sails over the joke, entirely seriously maintained.
Between festival and folly, Viersen works its textile inheritance into a diversified present: velvet and weaving built the founders' villas and the churches' ambition — St Remigius and the district parishes — while today's economy spans machinery and services, with the green Niers winding parkland through the quarters and the Süchtelner Höhen's wooded hills adding the Irmgardis pilgrimage chapel and viewpoints. The Dutch border's markets lie minutes west. Trumpets in autumn, fools in winter, the Niers in no hurry: Viersen keeps excellent time.
