Vilagarcia de Arousa — Vilagarcía, with its accent, flagged for the register — commands the ría where the Camino arrives by sea. The Traslatio, the legend's maritime prologue, has the Apostle's stone boat sailing up the Arousa estuary toward Padrón, and the ría re-enacts the voyage each summer in a waterborne procession of dressed boats — the sea route of St James, with Vilagarcía as its principal port, adding a nautical mile-zero to the pilgrimage the roads made famous. The town's daily faith is shellfish: the Arousa's bateas — the wooden mussel rafts moored in fleets across the water — farm the harvest that makes Galicia Europe's mussel power, with clams and cockles raked from the shore at low tide by the mariscadoras' bent-backed guild.
The calendar peaks wet: the Festa da Auga each August, when the town celebrates San Roque by soaking itself — balconies emptying buckets onto the crowds, fire hoses blessing all comers — one of Spain's most joyously drenched fiestas. The genteel past of Compostela's summering bourgeoisie left the town its gardens and pazos, Vista Alegre among them. The stage is documented in the concert record: the Auditorio Municipal, the modern hall carrying the touring and local seasons. A saint by sea, mussels by the raft, water from every window: Vilagarcía keeps the ría's liturgy in full flow.
