Warnemünde is where Rostock meets the sea — the old fishing village at the Warnow's mouth that grew into the Baltic's liveliest German resort. Its beach is the widest on the German Baltic coast, a great white apron of sand backed by dunes and the promenade, and its skyline is a beloved odd couple: the white lighthouse of 1898, climbable and iconic, beside the Teepott, the swooping concrete-shell pavilion whose curved roof — rebuilt by GDR engineer Ulrich Müther's daring in 1968 — made East German architecture briefly weightless.
The village bones survive along the Alter Strom, the old harbour channel where fishing cutters sell smoked fish beside pleasure boats, and the lanes of low captains' cottages behind it keep the salt-bleached charm that drew artists early: Edvard Munch lived here in 1907--08, painting bathers and the beach in canvases that hang in the world's museums — the Munch-Haus marks his stay. Today the arrivals are grander: Warnemünde is Germany's busiest cruise port, liners towering over the channel on summer mornings, and the Hanse Sail each August fills the roadstead with tall ships.
The Kurhaus and hotels keep resort rituals, Strandkörbe stripe the sand, and ferries cross to the wilder Hohe Düne shore. Archive note: Warnemünde is a district of Rostock, not an independent municipality — events here should reference Rostock in the workbook, with Warnemünde as the locality.
