Frederick the Fair handed the building to Vienna's councillors in 1316, and it served as the city's town hall for the next five and a half centuries, until the council met there for the last time on 20 June 1885 and moved to Friedrich von Schmidt's new Rathaus on the Ringstrasse. Successive rebuildings left the exterior Baroque — the gate dates from 1700 — with Gothic work still legible beneath, and in the courtyard stands Georg Raphael Donner's Andromeda Fountain of 1741. District offices, a local history museum and the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance occupy it now; the halls and the courtyard are lent to concerts.
