The Ancient Theatre of Plovdiv was constructed in the late first century AD, during the reign of Emperor Domitian. Built as a public monument of Philippopolis, it remained in use until the end of the fourth century. Archaeological investigations between 1968 and 1979 uncovered the structure and initiated its conservation. The restored theatre has subsequently returned to performance use, accommodating concerts and staged productions for audiences of about three thousand. Its surviving Roman architecture therefore forms both an archaeological site and an active open-air stage within the old city.
