A converted fabric shop on the main street housed the city gallery when it opened on 2 March 1952; the institution has since spread into nine buildings. The collection runs past eight thousand works — Bulgarian painting and sculpture from the Revival period onward, five centuries of icons including panels by the Samokov masters, and 1,150 Mexican prints presented in 1981. Chamber music is given among the pictures, Bach and Mozart in rooms hung with Bulgarian canvases.
