Artium is a municipal centre for culture and education in the newer part of Nessebar, officially opened on 24 May 2019. The building and the redesigned Zhulieta Shishmanova Square form a connected public complex. Its architecture reinterprets the traditional Nessebar house through the contrast between a solid lower storey and projecting upper volumes. The centre accommodates library services, educational groups and stage activities, while the square provides an outdoor performance area. The building received an award in Bulgaria’s Building of the Year competition in 2018. The Black Sea town of Nesebar, whose old quarter stands on a rocky peninsula under UNESCO protection, runs its cultural life through the municipal centre for art and culture Artium. Its season opens in October, once the summer crowds have gone, and continues through the winter with touring theatre productions, concerts and evenings with writers and poets. For a town given over to visitors half the year, it is where the other half happens.
