The Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest was built from 1886 to designs by Albert Galeron and inaugurated in 1888, with its concert hall completed the following year. Public fundraising helped finance the project. The circular auditorium seats 794 and has been the home of the George Enescu Philharmonic since 1889. A mural by Costin Petrescu presents Romanian history in twenty-five scenes. The Walcker organ was installed in 1939 after a fundraising campaign supported by Enescu. The Athenaeum received the European Heritage Label in 2024. It hosts the George Enescu International Festival, founded in 1958.
