Founded in 1878 as the Kronstädter Philharmonische Gesellschaft — Kronstadt being the German name of the city — the society gave its first concert on 6 May of that year under Anton Brandner. It grew out of the musical life of the Transylvanian Saxon community and widened into an institution for the whole city; George Enescu, an honorary member, appeared with it. Reorganised after the Second World War as a symphony orchestra, it plays today in Sala Patria, a former cinema rebuilt for concerts, and runs an international chamber music festival that has passed its fortieth edition. On tour abroad the players perform under the name Romanian National Philharmonic Orchestra.
