Bulgarian National Radio

Broadcasting in Bulgaria began with Rodno Radio, set up in Sofia in 1930 by a circle of engineers and enthusiasts; a royal decree of January 1935 nationalised it, and the state service that followed became today's Bulgarian National Radio. Music was written into the enterprise from early on rather than added to it: the radio maintains a symphony orchestra and a mixed choir of its own, and its Sofia studios double as concert rooms into which audiences are admitted. Horizont carries news and comment round the clock, Hristo Botev the arts, drama and classical music. Its Golden Fund — decades of Bulgarian performance preserved on tape — is among the most valuable musical holdings in the country.
