The Catholic parish of Waidhofen an der Ybbs, a town of some 11,000 in the Ybbstal of Lower Austria, has its seat in the Stadtpfarrkirche, built between 1470 and 1510 and holding a Gothic winged altar moved there from another church in the 1930s. The parish maintains a choir and an orchestra of its own, and Easter is the point in the year when they are used at full strength: orchestral settings of the Mass sung across the services of Holy Week and Easter Sunday, as over the three days of April 1998.
