The council is the religious governing body of Bulgaria's Jewish community, seated at the Sofia synagogue — a building of 1909 by the Austrian architect Friedrich Grünanger, modelled on the Leopoldstadt Temple in Vienna. It elects its board at reporting assemblies, the most recent recorded in 2022, and oversees religious life and the synagogue's calendar. In May 2014 it presented a concert of Jewish synagogue music in Sofia.
