Founded on 30 January 1856, the Svishtov chitalishte was the first in Bulgaria: Emanuil Vaskidovich gave his library of some 800 books and three fellow townsmen the money. Kiril D. Avramov left 200,000 gold leva in 1904 for a building to hold theatre and reading room together; Georgi Fingov and Kiro Marichkov drew the plans, and it opened on 14 September 1908. The hall still takes the town's staged music; the library keeps twelve manuscripts and over 600 early printed books.
