Seven years in the building and £1.63 million in the spending, Bromley's theatre opened on 19 July 1977, inaugurated by the Prince of Wales. The borough architect's department designed it as part of a civic complex shared with the central library, and its auditorium of some 780 seats lies below ground, reached by descending staircases, so that the audience sits beneath street level. It has run for most of its life under management contracts rather than with a resident company, taking touring drama, musicals, opera and pantomime; in 2024 the borough council accepted an offer from Trafalgar Entertainment for the freehold.
