Teplice, a town of about 51,000 in north-western Bohemia, is the oldest and the largest of the Czech spa towns; its baths are documented from 1154 and the historic centre is a protected monument zone. Music came with the cure. The city's orchestra, today the North Bohemian Philharmonic, was chartered in 1838 and played spa and symphony seasons for visitors; the town hall still commissions concerts of its own, among them a New Year's programme that carries its name.
