Collégiale de Neuchâtel

Work on the collegiate church of Notre-Dame began around 1190 on the castle hill above Neuchâtel, at the instance of Count Ulrich II and his wife Berthe; the west gable and porch closed the building around 1270-80. The base is Rhenish Romanesque, the upper parts and cloister Gothic, the roof laid with glazed tiles in the Burgundian manner. The south tower is thirteenth-century; the north tower and the spires came with Léo Châtelain's restoration of 1867-70. It has been a Protestant parish church since the Reformation.
