Sliven saw its first theatre performance in 1868 and formed its first permanent company in 1918; the house has been state-run since 1948 and moved in 1987 into a new building with a large auditorium, a chamber hall, a ballet studio and a room for one-actor work. Named after the actor Stefan Kirov, it has staged more than four hundred productions and toured Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Georgia, Slovenia and North Macedonia. The large hall doubles as the town's music venue: Kálmán's Die Csárdásfürstin in December 2012, the Sliven Symphony Orchestra in May 2013.
