A foundation stone laid in 1709 on the site of the old mint began the replacement of what French troops had destroyed in Worms twenty years earlier; the Lutheran city church, designed by the architect Villiancourt, was consecrated in 1725 and remains the largest Protestant church in the town. An air raid on 21 February 1945 left little but the outer walls, the lower tower and the carved west doors. Otto Bartning and Otto Dörzbach rebuilt it between 1955 and 1959, keeping the Baroque shell and giving the interior a wholly modern order, with fifteen tall windows by Wilhelm Buschulte. The Steinmeyer organ of 1959 — three manuals, fifty-six stops, some 3,700 pipes — is the largest in any Protestant church in Rheinhessen, and a carillon of twenty-three bells has sounded from the tower since 1956. Choral and orchestral concerts are frequent.
