Embassy of France in Bulgaria

The embassy's cultural work in Bulgaria is carried by the Institut français, set up in Sofia in April 1991 as a cultural centre, given the embassy's cultural, scientific and technical cooperation brief in 1997 and renamed Institut français de Bulgarie in 2011. From premises on Slaveykov Square it invites French performers into Bulgarian festivals — classical music, jazz, theatre, dance, cinema — and concentrates much of that programme in March, the month of la Francophonie. The Victor Hugo lycée in Sofia works alongside it.
