Marburg's civic hall carries the name of Erwin Piscator, the director born in the hills north of the town who did as much as anyone to reinvent the German stage between the wars. The building itself is plainer than its namesake: a multifunctional culture and events house in the Biegenviertel, enlarged and modernised in 2015 and 2016 to designs by Hess/Talhof/Kusmierz, which added seven metres along the whole northern flank and clad the distinctive diamond-shaped roof in bronze-coloured metal. Concerts, theatre, congresses and the university city's public occasions share it, and the Marburger Konzertverein presents its orchestral season in the main auditorium.
