Bremen's former racecourse near the Vahr was a sporting landmark for more than a century. Regular racing began there in 1907, with a large grandstand overlooking the course. After its closure in 2018, the future of the grounds became a public question: a 2019 referendum favoured retaining the area as green space. Temporary educational and recreational uses followed, while racing briefly returned in 2021 and 2022. The site now carries both the physical remains of its sporting history and the changing uses of a substantial open space within the city. A turf racecourse in the Vahr district of Bremen is no one's idea of a concert address, yet its wide ground and standing grandstands have served summer arena events, among them touring opera productions mounted on temporary stages. Racing remains the club's first business; music arrives with the warm weather and leaves with it.
